Blue Light Phones

http://www.nmsu.edu/~ucomm/atnmsu/cur/bluelightphones.html

Has anyone heard? Your voice in an emergency is about to be silenced. Blue
light phones are going to be removed from NMSU campus.

Here's a gem from the article.

" The phones were originally installed in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
At that time, less than 10 percent of the campus population had access to
mobile communication devices that would allow them to call for help. Now,
over 90 percent carry cell phones with them."

What exactly do they propose for the other ten percent?

Our campus is noisier about warning its students and faculty about pesticide
spraying, with weeks notice and articles in the Round Up. Where is the heads
up on this issue? Isn't this as, is not MORE, important?

Please help spread the word about this news, and help NMSU keep the blue light phones.

Call the campus police seven digit number (575) 646-3311 if you have concerns or questions about the removal of these SAFETY devices.

  2. I worked at NMSU student government, so I went to the senate meeting quite often. It was about a year ago, campus police department told one of the director of student government that those blue light was turned off long time ago by both police department and ICT department... Campus police said that such devices were played by the skatters in school, which means many false alarms are caused by them on campus. After knowing that the blue light phones are turned off, the director start pushing "Pete's Pickup." I have never tried such service, so I don't know what the down sides of this program, if anybody who have used the service and would like to share it, I would like to know how your feeling toward the program.
I would also like to know if FREE still meet on campus and when. Thanks!
